Welcome to another entry in Travel Stories, where I share images from my travels that stood out—often in ways I didn’t expect at the time.

When my wife and I travel, we rarely do the typical tourist thing. We tend to skip the lines and just explore on our own. It gives us a better feel for the places we visit, and more often than not, we stumble across the best food and the most interesting moments along the way.

So when we found ourselves in Kusadasi, Turkey, surrounded by a few thousand other cruise ship passengers, we decided to pass on the excursions and set out on foot.

Wandering without much of a plan, we came across a small courtyard that opened into this narrow passage.

What caught me immediately was the repetition—the first arch framing the second, and then the doorway beyond. Each layer pulled you a little further in. Everything was wrapped in warm light, with the texture of the stone catching just enough detail to give it depth without overwhelming the scene.

Along the right side, the foliage broke up the stone just enough to soften it, while the small containers at the base added a subtle reminder that this wasn’t just a quiet space—it was a lived-in one.

It’s not the kind of image most people go looking for when they travel, but it ended up being my favorite from that stop.
