My wife and I have always loved a good fair. State fair, town fair — it doesn’t really matter. The rides, the food, the atmosphere… it’s all so far removed from the normal day-to-day that it always feels like a bit of an escape.

One we try to make every year is the Sterling Fair in Sterling, Massachusetts. It’s close to home, easy to get to, and has just the right mix of everything you’d expect.

On this particular visit, we happened to arrive during blue hour — that brief window after sunset when the sky holds onto that deep, rich blue before giving way to night.

It’s one of my favorite times to photograph. The ambient light is still present, but the artificial lights begin to take over, creating that contrast between cool and warm tones.

That contrast immediately stood out.

Watching the rotating swings, I was drawn less to the ride itself and more to the motion it created. The blur of the chairs, the circular energy, the way the structure stayed grounded while everything around it seemed to dissolve.

Using a longer exposure, I wanted to capture that feeling — not just what the ride looked like, but what it felt like to stand there and watch it spin.

Something constant at the center, with everything else in motion.

Pulling back a bit, the scene changes.

The second image brings the fair back into focus — the ride, the lights, and the food all sharing the same space. The energy is still there, but now it’s grounded in something familiar.

Bright signs, warm light, and the kind of food that always feels like part of the experience. Fried dough, hot dogs, pizza — not subtle, not refined, but exactly right in the moment.

Between the motion and the stillness, the abstraction and the context, this is what a fair feels like to me.

Not just a place, but a mix of light, movement, and small moments that only really come together once the sun goes down.
