Travel Stories: The Golden Gate in Fog

Welcome to another entry in Travel Stories, where I share images from my travels that stood out to me—often for reasons I didn’t expect at the time. Normally when I travel and photograph, I’m with my wife and it’s part of a vacation. This trip was a little different. I was in San Francisco for a work conference and found myself with a free day after it wrapped up. I decided to drive up to Muir Woods, thinking the fog might keep the crowds down and give me a chance to capture some quieter images of the redwoods. That… didn’t quite work out. I spent the better part of half a day walking the trails with what felt like a couple thousand of my closest friends and never really found an image that clicked. I may go back and revisit those photos at some point with a fresh perspective, but that’s not really what this story is about. On the drive back to the hotel, it hit me—the Golden Gate Bridge in fog might be worth chasing. I pulled off in Sausalito and wandered around the marina area for a bit until I found this view. The top of the suspension towers disappeared into the fog, leaving just enough of the structure to hint at its scale. Now I had something. I spent a couple of hours working the scene from different angles, but kept coming back to this composition. The muted tones, the still water, and that strip of red fading into nothing—it all felt quiet in a way I didn’t expect from such an iconic location. I think I stood there for close to half an hour, camera down, just watching it.
