Craftsmanship in ReliefIntricate decoration covers nearly every visible surface of this historic suit of armor. The close composition and controlled lighting were chosen to reveal the extraordinary craftsmanship while still preserving the shape and presence of the armor.

What amazed me about this particular piece of armor was the amount of detail. There’s real craftsmanship here, with fine details covering almost every square inch.

I wanted to capture that detail without losing the sense of what the piece actually is. If you’ve ever tried photographing something in a museum, you know the lighting isn’t always particularly helpful—usually overhead, harsh, and designed for viewing rather than photography.

For this project, the docent let me bring in a softbox and light the armor my own way. That gave me the chance to bring out all of those little details while still letting the shadows define the shape of the armor.
