A quintessential Italian travel moment capturing both history and grandeur.📸 Some monuments are timeless — and the Colosseum is the ultimate reminder.

Welcome to another entry in Travel Stories, where I share images from my travels that stood out—often for reasons I didn’t expect at the time.

If you’ve been following along, you probably know by now that I don’t usually do the typical tourist thing. My wife and I tend to wander on our own, trying to experience a place through exploration rather than a checklist.

But… when in Rome, right?

This was one of the few times we opted for a group tour. There was just too much we wanted to see, and it made sense to take advantage of it.

When we reached the Colosseum, I did what everyone does—I took the postcard shots. But once that was out of the way, I started looking for something else.

Walking around the exterior, I kept searching for an angle that felt a little less obvious.

This one stood out.

By shifting slightly upward, I was able to minimize the crowds and let the structure take over the frame. The light was working in my favor, bringing out the texture and detail across the face of the stone.

What really drew me in, though, was the geometry—the curve of the Colosseum against the strong diagonal of the outer wall. It started to feel less like a landmark and more like a study in shape and form.

It’s still the Colosseum. It just doesn’t quite look like the version everyone expects.
